  Codec for Lightwave clips to FCP..HD 720p24

  My goal is to make a 3D animation for viewing on LCD screens, either monitors or LCD HD sets. There’s a chance I might go to film.

  I can not figure out what format to export from QT 7 for use in FC Studio. I can create an image sequence from LW 8, 16 bit, and import into QT, but when I get into the time line with various exported codecs, I get either artifacts or dismal timeline performance.

  If my goal is to maintain rendered quality (high) then do I have to accept choppy timeline performance? Which codec will give me the best quality throughout production?

  When I’m all finished editing, then I’d save out as various formats for DVD and web.

  Is there a way I can get better performance during editing with some kind of proxy clip, then swap out the “real” high-rez clips for rendering?

  What are you using as a media drive? Performance would be contigent on that.. i.e. HD requires some pretty fast drives…

  Yeah, I’m bumping into that reality..I have 2 7200RPM external drives..appx 160GB and 250GB each, and I have my FCP projects on those drives.

  I’m starting to get the feeling that I’m looking at what my limiting factors are, in terms of what I *can* produce. What I’ve seen is that my set up (Dual 2ghz G5) can’t deliver 24 fps smoothly at the full quality.

  Since I’m limited by budget, do you feel that I need to look at codecs which my system can deliver smoothly, then set up my workflow around that?

  I’m having a bit of a problem with codecs and such with FCP myself.

  One solution that we used to use on Premier was to take a bunch of still into the program. I don’t know if FCP will do this, but in Premier you could make a seies of still into a “movie” and then edit them like normal before you went out to tape.

  Now, if I could find out if FCP used RPFs, I’d be closer to set.

  FCP can take a series of stills, but you have to be very careful to stipulate the length of imported stills, somewhere in the Prefs.

  If not, you’ll get the default, which is 10 seconds.

  I don’t think that method (importing stills) would help me in this case bcs I am butting up against the limitations of just how much data my G5 and hard drives can blow thru without stuttering.
