reconnecting to quicktime file
I have a NTSC project edited on FCP somewhere else. Since I normally work in PAL we don’t have NTSC recorders or players. So I rented a NTSC DigiPlayer and captured all the tapes from start to finish. I now have long quicktime files with timecode.
But the editor who did the offline did not capture the whole tape at once. There are about 400 short clips.
How do I reconnect these short clips to my long Quicktimes? Simply ‘reconnect media’ does not work and cutting the long quicktimes by hand would take a day or two.
There must be an easier way…Help?

If you’d captured his clips, this wouldn’t be happening… But I think you’ll have to spend the two days…

I know… But I had to have all the footage from the tapes, the recorder was only available for a limited time and the project arrived while I was capturing.

Yes, there is. It’s called “Batch Capture”. The previous editor has basically done all of this work for you. All you need to do now is load the tapes & click OK. If you’re unfamiliar with how batch capture works, you can consult your manual.

To Batch Capture you need a recorder or player. I do not have a NTSC player. I rented one, captured all the footage available and send the player back. Now I want to link the Quicktimes to the edit. “As if” the Quicktimes are tapes so to speak.
If only it were a matter of Batch Capture…A

Listen, I’m not trying to lecture you or scold you, but this is a simple workflow issue. If you had timed the deck rental properly, you wouldn’t have to waste time reconnecting the clips this way.
What’s your time worth? What’s the cost of the deck rental for another day?

True, if the only possibility is reconnecting every single clip by hand I’ll rent the deck again. That’s not the issue here. The reason I asked this question here is that if there is a simple way to do this I won’t waste any time or money.
Please don’t tell me what I should have done. You are lecturing… 😉

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the issue, but couldn’t you do a Select>All with the clips in the Browser and then File>Reconnect? That should work as long as the original logger used the same tape name and time codes.

in an avid, where the app connects to clips via reel# and TC, what arjen wants to do would be possible.
i can completely see arjens situation, but it just is not possible in FCP, which connects clips to media via the much more fragile clip name / file name method.
arjen i think the quickest way would be to reconnect each clip manualy.
what a drag!select the original clips on a REEL basis: that is, select all the clips that came from Reel1.
Reconnect.
you’ll have to direct each reconnect prompt to your recently captured Reel1.in FCP5, for each clip you’ll have to click on:
1 Locate
2 The file (it goes back to the previous location, so that’s not too bad)
3 Continue (you’ll get a warning, and a choice to continue, or cancel)hope there’s not too many.
