What kind of breakout box (within a budget) could I use with the version 4? I have a Beta SP deck, a low line DVC pro deck and a mini-DV camera. I bought a Matrox RTMac box and inputing video and audio works, but outputing back to the decks seems to not work. I have all the settings correct according to the FCP and Matrox manuals, but cannot see the output to my decks which are in line to the monitors. Please HELP!!!!

Take a look at the Canopus ADVC box.. https://www.canopus.com

But you really might not need this at all. You should be able to to take the S video and the audio from the Betacam machine thru the DV deck and accomplish the same thing… Then take the deck’s outputs to the Beta to record back. Conversion then is being done by the DV deck connected to your Mac via firewire.

Unfortunately, the DVC pro deck is not equipped with the firewire output. Yesterday I bought the ADS Pyro AV link hoping it would be better to input using the firewire, but am having sync issues with the Beta deck. This is a nightmare as I come from the world of Media 100 that had a BOB with multiple ins and outs. Now with FCP and little money, I have to be more creative and its not easy.

you should have all you need. Not knowing what you are running, I’m assume its fcp4 and panther? anyway, media 100’s breakout was nice, but you’ll never look back once you get the hang of fcp. anyway, first thing Get Rid of RTmac- it does nothing for fcp4 exept give the mac a headache. the tech is ancient at this point. make sure your computer is up to date and cleaned(trash prefrences, repair permissions etc)and then try the pyro box. inever used one, but that should work. That dvc deck is useless without firewire, so without a router, you have to change deck based on what you are capturing.

I finally got the thing up and running. I just basically re-routed the whole system, running the Beta deck into the DVC deck and to the BOB on the RT Mac. It seems to be working. The Pyro wasn’t working at all. One of the advantages of the RT Mac is that it has the RT effects and doesn’t require rendering to view transitions and such. Maybe not a perfect solution, but until I can afford a bigger, beefier BOB using the firewire, this will have to do.

Thanks for all the help you all gave me!!!
