I just encoded a 90 minute project to MPEG2 using Compressor. It took 4 1/2 hours on my Dual 2-Gig G5. That’s about double what it used to be on the old Compressor, using VBR. Are others experiencing the same?

    Hey Chris,

Apparently it’s happening to everyone. I did a 15 minute show last week that took 50 minutes, and encoded the same movie in Compression Master in 17 minutes.

Optical Flow processing is much higher quality than 2 pass VBR. So it takes longer for the higher quality encodes. I believe you can disable it though, can’t you?

Please explain, Kevin. What is Optical Flow Processing? I was using 2-pass VBR. It took more than twice as long as before, and the quality is no better.

If you have more than one mac you can setup a render farm with Compressor2. I haven’t upgraded yet, but others can fill you in on how to set it up.

    Hi Chris,
Optical Flow Processing is one of the key features announced with Compressor 2. I don’t have a lot of experience with it, unfortunately.

What is Optical Flow Processing? Well, I am not an engineer, but if you do a search on the web, you can find a more exacting explanation. I just did, and it’s very interesting. It’s quite scientific and way over my head to explain in a pinch.

To be very generic, and from what I gathered, Optical Flow is a high quality way of temporal image processing borrowed from Shake.

And that’s gotta be good, unless you don’t have a powerful G5.

As Hector mentioned, you can set up an “encoding farm” with other Macs on your network. I got a chance to try this with a 10 seat Xsan and it was really cool. Encoding speed goes really fast on that baby!

Optical Flow processing plays no part in MPEG2 encoding though……

I was, however, doing some tests with Opical Flow in Compressor 2 and it was like render times of 4h30 for 1 minute of footage. Apple’s got to be pulling our legs with that kind of “speed”.

Can anyone explain how to set up a render farm for Compressor 2? Can you do something similar with FCP5?
