While using FCP 4.5 on a G5, I export a QuickTime file, then import it into iDVD. Looks good on a computer, but when it plays on a TV I get interlacing whenever there’s movement. What am I doing wrong?

I tried all sorts of export techniques, but I still get the same results.

    Anyone have any ideas? I

when you’re editing the project, are you using an external television to monitor the timeline? You can’t use your computer Canvas screen to edit video that will end up on a television precisely due to interlacing issues that can arise.

Ensure that your timeline is set for the correct field dominance, generally lower for NTSC and upper for PAL, and ensure that all of your renders are set to render in Fields.

You might want to try exporting your sequence from FCP via Compressor (File>Export>Using Compressor). I use the 60 min High Quality setting and it works out great for me. You basically wiill have more control over your encode if you do it yourself instead of letting iDVD compress it. Poke around in the DVDSP forum for more on encoding.

Todd, I didn’t think iDVD took MPEG files, though. Does the new version allow that?

SlowX, are you exporting using “Export at Quick Time” not “Quickime Exporter?”

I’ve tried “Export-> Using QuickTime Conversion…” and that still usually gives me the interalcing.

I do view everything on a television monitor while editing, and when I print to tape eveything is fine, it’s just when I export a QuickTime to use on in iDVD that I get the interlacing issues.

Yeah, don’t use that one, use the other one. If you’re having problems with that too then it might be something with the sequence or the way the video was captured. As Walter said, it needs to all be “lower” field first in the prefrences.

Instead of messing with your project too much, start another project and capture 3 minutes of new video. Check your settings as you go while you do all this to make sure everything’s what it should be for the project AND for the capturing. Make a DVD of that and see if it’s better or not. That will help you figure out of the problems really are Final Cut settings or not. There’s no sense spending a lot of time on FCP prefrences if you can find out that it’s not the problem very quickly by doing this.

    Makes a lot of sense.

But, forgive me for this one if it’s basic, but where are the preferences for capturing video correctly? Or is it in the manual where I haven’t looked yet (’cause i DID look… i SWEAR!).

    Thanks so much!

There is no way I’m going to remember it correctly being aways from my Mac as I am. I’d better not tell you too much lest I get something wrong.

The bottom line is that you have “System Settings,” “User Prefrence,” and “Easy Setups.” In addition to that, in the log and capture window there are some more settings. Spend some time with ALL of those areas and you’ll soon start to figure out what is where. I can do it when I’m looking at it, but it’s too complex to do from memory.

(Look up some of those terms in the manual’s index. It really is all in there if you look long enough!)

Are you using iDVD 4.0.1 or 5.0.1? I’m having the same problem with 5.0.1 with FCP 4.5 & FCP 5 in Panther and Tiger. The only combination that works for me is Mac OS X 10.3.8, QT 6.5.2, FCP 4.5, Pro App Support 2.1 ( don’t install 3.0 in Panther 10.3.8) & iDVD 4.0.1. iDVD 5.0.1 also adds black bars to the top and bottom of a “Decklink” encoded QT movie. I haven’t tried a QT reference movie yet. I’ll let you know if that helps.

Does anyone else have this problem with iDVD 5.0.1 & FCP QT Movies?

    Will do. And thanks!

Don’t mean to use anyone here as a replacement for manuals.

(I DID look, if that matters 😉
