  Audio popping

  I have digitized several clips into FCP 3.0. I set the capture/input setting at DV NTSC 48 Khz. When I check the settings once the pieces are digitized… they read 48.0 khz and sometimes 47999.5khz. Why is that? When I play a sequence I get audio popping. The pops are not in the audio files. Is this because there are different sample rates of audio files in the sequence. How can I fix the problem?

  Let me guess…
  Are the tapes from a Canon camcorder?

  But more…

  The audio is, by default, MUTED to the Mac’s speaker output during Log and Capture.

  You should normally monitor the audio directly from the camcorder or deck you are using to capture.

  Many people have reported that noise or “pops” appear in the captured clips if the Mac’s internal audio is left on WHILE capturing… so may want to choose “Off During Capture.”

  Here is the way you can turn OFF the Mac’s speaker:

  Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > Capture Presets (tab)

  “Duplicate” the Capture Preset you are now using, when the window opens rename it (I added “MacAudioOFF” to the file name).

  Click open the “Advanced” button in the Audio section and turn speakers to “OFF during Capture.”
  The Mac speakers/audio-out will now NOT play Audio during the preview in the Log and Capture window. (Monitor from the camcorder or deck.)

  Thanks for the reply Matte, but I think there is another issue here.

  The internal monitor was off. The pops are not in the audio files themselves but only appear during playback of a sequence. These are virtual pops!

  Does popping occur because there are different sample rates of audio in the same sequence? Why are some files 48khz and others 47999.5khz? What would be an easy way to make all audio files the same sample rate? I’m already way into my project.

  Is your audio very loud? Check your FCP audio meters. It’s possible you are hearing clipping distorsion because the audio level is too hot.
