Has anyone successfully brought HDV from the sony into a dvcpro HD timeline? I must be doing something horribly wrong. I’ve tried with everything except Lumiere, which has been ordered. Not frustrated, but getting close.

You can not bring HDV (MPEG-2) and DVCPROHD (compressed HD) into the same project timeline. Totally different formats and codecs. You can select either format in FCP 5, but not both at the same time.

I’m willing to render it out, I just need to get hdv b roll into a dvcprohd timeline … then out as dvcprohd. I don’t mind rendering …

You might try capturing your HDV as HDV then, use FCP media manager to recompress it as DVCproHD 1080i. This works pretty well. You will have to see if you get interlacing issues. Or try compressor’s advanced transcoding to DVCpro HD from the HDV captures.

Not a perfect workflow but might do it for you.

Did exactly the same thing for a project couple of weeks ago.
I opened the HDV Mpeg2 files with Qicktime (wich took about 5min to open) and then exported it to DVCPROHD, altered the with to 1920 instead of 1440, and let QT do it
