Striping DV Tapes
Summer is here and our office is flooded with interns hoping to be the next bright stars in the firmament.
Our Edit studio has an intern named Mike. Mike will be helping Max and myself most of the summer.
One of the things that I want to task him with, is laying down timecode and black on our MiniDV blank tapes. Simple,right?.
Question is, we have 4 possible sources to lay down black and code and they don’t neccesarily work well together. We have a Canon GL1, a Sony DSR-20 DVCAM deck, a Sony 1500A DVCAM deck and a Sony DV Walkman model DV G900.
Is there any risk in using one one the lower scale units (the walkman,for example) for tape prep to the 2 DVCAM decks.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Why would you ever need to pre-stripe mini DV tapes for use in camcorders?
IMHO, it adds nothing but head wear to the gear used to stripe the tape, since all camcorders fully record OVER any TC that is striped on the tapes.
This practice does NOT always preclude inadvertent resets to 00:00:00 due to inattentive playbck checks and re-starts.
But if you are intent on doing this, any properly-operating camcorder or deck (home video type to full broadcast unit) will do the job.
Just remember that if you want DVCAM speed tapes, stripe them on a DVCAM unit in DV mode.
Otherwise, any DV unit can stripe DV SP. -

“For Edit masters? You’ll need higher quality DV Decks for that.
I hope you are not blacking tapes prior to shooting with them. That is a total waste of time.

“The 1500 is the only deck you can preset TC to 58:00:00 with. All the others won’t help you.

The only reason to stripe tapes would be to have different hour code for each tape. Only the first 10 seconds need be striped.
