saving from AE 7 to work in AE 6.5

It’s impossible.

AE has never had this capability. We’ll have to wait for the AE team to add this functionality in the future, but it would probably be difficult.

Can a demo copy of AE 7 render out a movie. or is this feature locked out…

Yep, you have 30 days acces to all standard functions(not pro). Mind that the bundled plugins like CC and Keylight and not bundled with the demo.
