G5 urgent
Hello,
I have a G5 1.8 dual, 1.5 GB RAM, and it crashes everytime I try to do a MPEG 2 compression. It does it fine if I use only 1.25 GB RAM. It also crashes if I use 2.0 GB RAM .The memory sticks are perfect. I’ve alreay reinstalled FCP and OSX.
Any ideas why it happens?
Just to add: This computer was sent to me by APPLE to replace the one I bought (with the same specifications) that came with huge problems, had its logic board replaced twice and presented the same sort of crashes this new one is presenting, when doing the same operation.

Sounds like you’ve answered your own post… if you add certain RAM chips the problem shows up? sounds like bad RAM then, right?

they are not bad RAM because if I take out of the computer the ones I know that are working fine and just put the new ones (2 sticks of 512) , it works fine.

Sounds like you may have mis-matched RAM. Running a different speed or something. Something is definitely wrong with the RAM because if you have all of it installed, you say you have crashes.
Whenever I order a Mac, I get it with the minimum RAM installed by Apple. I then replace all of it with RAM from http://www.crucial.com. I run with 3GB RAM in one G5, 4GB RAM in another G5 and 1GB RAM in my Powerbook. All from Crucial with no issues.

Walter’s probably right on the money here… not bad, but mismatched somehow. I’m quite certain that all the RAM chips have to match spec wise to work together right… and your testing points right at the RAM not matching. Crucial is the way to go here… it always works, is spec’d correctly etc… I too only use Crucial.

Hi Walter,
even all the RAM being the same brand and tested before, even though, you think it could still be a RAM problem? The whole thing is that I’ve tried different RAM about 3 times already, and the problem persists.
This computer is one APPLE replaced to me because of all the problems I had with the previous one, but the same sort of problems are still there. Could it be something specific of G5 1.8?

For what it is worth, I went round and round with Apple because of problems with a dual 1.8 G5.
Replaced everything in the computer, some components twice before they offered a replacement computer.
After reading, and then confirming that there are inherent problems with the 1.8 platform,
Including a known problem with the PCI bus, I decided to pay the difference and get a dual 2.0 G5.
Apple upgraded the video card as a gesture because of all my down time.
The dual 2.0 G5 has had no problems what so ever, and all the RAM that would not work properly in the 1.8
works great in the 2.0.Good Luck!

I think I’m going through exactly the same problem. Is there anyway to prove to APPLE that all these problems you mentioned do exist ? Apple has been ignoring all my complains… And I bought the computer on January 31st !! I couldn’t finish a single project in this computer unitl now.

Sounds like a RAM problem to me.
RAM is cheap right now. I would purchase 2 gigs from Crucial (about $200), remove the other RAM and install the Crucial RAM. If it works you have solved the problem. If not send it back to Crucial (its not working) and complain to Apple. It does work you could then try adding in your other RAM (first try one set of chips, then try the other).
BTW I have a DP 1.8. Started with 1/2 gig of Apple RAM plus a Gig of Crucial. Never any problems. Recently added a second gig of Crucial still no problems (YMMV).

If this is not the RAM it must be the motherboard. If there is an Apple store within a reasonable distance take it in and explain the problem. Ask them to fill it up with new RAM for testing and see it the problem still exists. If so you have just proven that its a problem with the computer. If not you know you have bad RAM. If there is no Apple store nearby you might find someone else who works on Mac’s (or maybe even PC’s) to help you test this.

thank you for your suggestions. This is a replacement computer APPLE offered me because the other one (the one I bought) had similiar problems. It had the logic board replaced twice and it was still crashing. That’s why APPLE agreed to replace it. Now, I’m a bit skeptical. I will try changing RAM once more, but I’m wondering if it is some sort of inherent problem with the G5 1.8 plataform, as David Jone mentioned.
