Hello I’m a recent FCP convert working on new G5 & FCP 4.5
I’m walking into a project where the G5 is fresh out of the box & all software including FCP 4.5 was loaded by a non FCP user.
I’ve tried to go throught preferences & settings to make sure I’m set up properly, but since I’m new to FCP I’m not 100% sure if it all makes sense.
Do you have a checklist or anything that you check setting / preferences before starting a project? Or can I figure as long as I can see the media & edit, then all is well in my world.

The project is DV PAL. 50% of the media is being put on a Lacie hard drive straight out of a post transfer house. This original media was a combo of Digi Beta PAL, NTSC Beta & DV, & HD DV & all had to be transferred anyway. Then the other 50% of the footage is being logged & captured staright out of a XL1S dv camera PAL.

At the end of the day- The final project will go from the Lacie Hard drive to a post house for final output to a Master tape & DVD Mastering.

Few questions on System Settings & Scratch Discs / Setting them up properly.
I realize they are where you store your files. How can I check if they were set up properly.
Right now they are set like so:

Video Capture / Audio Capture / Video Render / Audio Render = these are all selected

They are linked to a Final Cut Pro Documents Folder / within this folder there are the following folders:
    Audio Render Files (currently empty)
    Autosave Vault
    Capture Scratch (currently empty)
    Render FilesThumbnail Cache Files
    Waveform Cache Files

    Shouldn

Select the LaCie for everything but the Autosaves, Waveform Caches, and Thumbnail files. Put those on your startup disk. Also run your project file from your documents folder on the startup disk, and in the end, just copy it to the LaCie for transfer to the post house.

In the FCP menu select system settings. You will now be taken to your scratch disk settings. Just click the “set” button on each of the itmes in the dialog box and choose where you want your files to be. Should take less then a minute to complete. Also, any time you save a project file do it as a “save as”. This will reduce the possibiltiy of project files becoming corrupt. Hope this helps and welcome to the world of Final Cut Pro!
