  • offline advice for 10bit UC short film- please help!

Looks like I made a major mistake. I bought a Mac mini to test out fcp on a short film I just shot on super 16mm film. I’m experienced with PC editing on Vegas now for a few years, but I wanted to try out what is the industry standard here. I transfered the film to digibeta and captured it to a Lacie Big Disk Extreme at 10bit uncompressed b/c there’s a lot of color correction I’m looking to do to complete the look I want.
I thought I could take the uncompressed material and export a DV25 version to do an offline edit on my mini, then borrow a friend’s G5 to do the online. Turns out exporting a DV25 version loses the timecode, which I had been told it did not do. Oh well. My question now is if there is another way to do an offline edit that does not entail borrowing or renting a digibeta deck, or if I should kill my grandmother and buy a G5 suitable for uncompressed 10bit work with the inheritance. I kid about my grandmother out of gallows humor b/c I am becoming desperate, so please don’t take any offence.
Anyway, I greatly appreciate any help in this way as this damn project is escalating in cost beyond my wildest dreams and I really didn’t want to buy a G5 until I was sure I could work with FCP and until they incorporated PCI express video cards. Oh well again. Perhaps that is not an option.
Anyway, I’ve bought quite a few DVD tutorials and am trying my best, but I could really use some help with this. So thanks ahead of time for any advice!

[mus man] “I thought I could take the uncompressed material and export a DV25 version to do an offline edit on my mini, then borrow a friend’s G5 to do the online. Turns out exporting a DV25 version loses the timecode, which I had been told it did not do. Oh well”

Did you use the Media Manager to convert the 10bit material to DV25? You don’t lose the timecode doing that method. If you simply exported all the clips as DV, then yes, you’ll lose the timecode.

I’m sorry, that’s exactly what I should have done. I’m just not used to the whole media manager thing, but I’ll give that a go. Just to make sure, after I do this I can reconnect the media to the digibeta for the online after I’ve compliled a DV25 edit, right?
    Thanks again!

In theory yes, I’ve never had to perform this procedure and I just cut online all the time. Media Manager is THE weakest part of Final Cut Pro so you may have to massage it a few times to get it to work correctly.

as long as you don’t use the delete unused media function you should be able to relink without problem. i’ve done it a million times. it’s when you use delete unused that it becomes really confusing. especially if you have media without timecode in your project, like aif’s.

Thank you both for the help. I’ve been experimenting all day and it seem to work if I offline in DV25 and online from the UC digibeta. Been switching back and forth just to make sure and it seems to be fine. Thanks again!
