I hired some guys to shoot an event for me. coverage was good. picture was bad. they apparently did not white balance correctly and now i am stuck with this orange looking picure. I have been playing around with the 3 way color corrector, upping the midrange control to 130 and putting a little blue in the mids. But i do not have a whole lot of experience in color corrections. I’m hoping somebody out there has had to correct and orange looking picture. And although i’m sure that it will never look as good as it could have, I still have to work with this and make it presentable. And advice on what filters and controls to focus on? Especially with an orange looking picture? Thanks in advance for your replies.

use the scopes. much easier than looking at the image. the rbg parade will tell you exactly what is wrong and how to fix it if you learn to use it. use the shadows and highlights controls first before you touch the mids.

scopes? rbg parade? i wish i knew what you were talking about, because i’ve been doing it by sight, sliding back and forth until it looks somewhat respectable. your way sounds better. Little more info would be great. thanks.

    Read this

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/cc_legal_fcp4.html

Also note the book he mentions in the above article.

Also consider “Practical Color Correction for Final Cut Pro 3 and 4” from Intelligent Assistant (It’s a CD)

    and this

It’s to give a simple answer to such a complex subject. If you have to ask about what the scopes are you should start by reading the FCP manual.

select the “color correction” layout preset and the scope window will appear. it will let you see how the image data looks, where the black and white level is for the different channels and so on. it’s hard to explain exactly how to use it but you’ll figure it out. find a scene with a neutral palette, tweak and observe how the graphs change. good luck.

    Hi James,
2 things you can do to get closer to true color.
Click the Auto Contrast button once. (It’s the one with the black and white arrow on it).
Then use the eyedropper near the Whites Balance controls.
Just click on an area that appears white.

This info will get you most of the way there. My book also includes information about basic color correction and effects you can make with the color corrector.
