  FCP 5 poor quality playback in Canvas/Viewer

  Okay, this is either a real lame fix, or I’m encountering something odd. Just editing a DV project in FCP 5 on a dual 2.7 with 4GB Ram. Video and text that is created in FCP looks jagged as if it was in draft mode. Yet, all my settings are for high quality and Safe Real Time.

  For example, I created a simple background with animated text in Livetype and it looks crisp and sharp in the Livetype viewer and in a QT viewer. But in FCP the same file looks like its in draft mode in both the viewer and canvas. No wait, I’m not done. The video looks good on my external monitor.

  So I loaded the original movie created in Livetype in a QT window next to a new self-contained version created from the original in FCP side by side, and you won’t believe how poor the image looks compared to the original.

  Am I missing something? I’ve gone through the classic deleting of FCP preference files and tried the easy setups as well. Still get the same results.

  Same problem here. Go to Seqence menu > Settings > Video tab > Filter: FASTEST (Linear) and reRender. That should fix the problem.

  DV is an interlaced television format. Are you looking at your output on a video monitor?

  I think you mean the Video Processing Tab. Fastest is not the highest quality, Best is…by far. I rendered out a Time Remap effect that looks simply stunning.

  If that’s the case, then don’t worry about it. You should ALWAYS check your render quality in the video monitor and never the Canvas. You haven’t been hiding under a rock, have you? Everyone knows that! 😉

  Yes, Sort of. You should always, always, always be checking your work on a video monitor. and your speakers should be connected to the same source as that video monitor, be it a DV deck, an Io, a Decklink card, whatever.

  FCP’s canvas is intended only as a low-res preview. Your NTSC or PAL monitor is your real guide.
