What is a good kind of RAM to buy for G5?
Posted by Nicole on May 20, 2005 at 8:50 pmI had alot of crashing with FCP and think it was from bad RAM. What is a good/reliable kind of RAM to get for G5? Need 1GB of RAM total.

May 20, 2005 at 8:59 pmWe have bought from Crucial.com and otherworld computing. Both have been successful.
From what I understand, you must upgrade RAM in G5’s by pairs….meaning you will have to buy two 512MB chips if you want 1GB. -

===That’s right, but just to be clear that’s only a factor for dual-G5s. In other words, if you give a RAM chip to one processor, you have to give the same kind of chip to the other processor. So iMacs and single-chip Powermacs don’t have to follow that rule.

May 20, 2005 at 9:34 pmI’ve bought RAM from 2 places that are extremely reasonable and no problems. Transintl.com and Outpost.com
I just bought 2 – 1 gig from transintl for about 240.00 which I thought was reasonable. Its samsung brand. Outpost sells kingston even cheaper than most other places sell it. Either way I havent had any problems using it.

May 20, 2005 at 11:28 pmJust recently bought 4 x 1GB PC3200 DDR 400 SAMSUNG chips for $500 from 18004memory.com. This is the exact same RAM that Apple uses/sells in their Retail stores (even has the same sticker), except it would cost you $1200 there. The shipping was fast (Fedex 2-day). They have a specific “Apple” section, and seem to be really competitive in their pricing.

May 21, 2005 at 1:13 amOne quick question guys. I’ve got 2 Gigs already in this dual G5 . Do I need to match the RAM thats already installed, or can I switch brands..as long as I put in a matching pair .

May 21, 2005 at 4:22 amYou should have no issues putting in a different brand of RAM, however you should try and match the clock speeds of the individual chips themselves. Regardless of brand, if the specs are similar then you should be able to get comprable performance from the system.
