    Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had enough understanding of AE to tell me whether it renders a lower layer even though the next layer above has no transparency (a solid layer, a video etc)? I’m making the assumption AE renders the layers from the bottom up evaluating transparencies, masks etc as it gets to the top to create the final displayed image. If that is the case, it would be beneficial to trim away any uneccesary layers underneath ones that have no transparency simply to avoid wasting this compositing time.

To clarify, if you have 9 text layers with blurs, distortions and other effects, but the top most layer is a solid Black layer with nothing on it, does AE render all 9 text layers first not realising it’s about to end on a layer that negates all that rendering?

    Cheers
    Lev…

Not to be pedantic, but this is the sort of thing you can figure out with a quick test. Pick something like a footage layer with time>echo applied with a high number of echoes, then place the solid black above it. Render with and without the echoed layer, then compare the times in the render queue. Hey, 1 second should do it. Do the “without” first.
