  mpeg2 importing

  I work for an organization that specializes in youth multimedia education. Part of my job is storing and archiving all past products. We switched over to DVD Studio Pro about a year and a half ago, and have been exporting our projects as Mpeg2s ever since. However, I’ve noticed that whenever I import an mpeg2 file back into Final Cut, the video and audio files are different lengths and therefore out of sync. It’s only a frame or two for a shorter piece or PSA, but it adds up to several seconds for 15-20 minute pieces

  Is there some export setting that I’m missing to cause this sync issue? Am I wrong to export it with Quicktime Conversion?

  Having this sync issue is a serious problem in terms of archiving. This means that I now need to keep an mpeg2 for DVD Duplication as well as a Quicktime export for any VHS compilations or minor changes in FCP.

  Does someone have a solution to this?

  How are you importing the MPEG2? There might be a glitch somewhere in that flow.

  The easiest thing we’ve done for resyncing audio from weird Canon cameras is to simply adjust its speed to fit the video track. There are several ways to do this, here’s one:

  Find the exact length of the video track.
  Select the audio track only, control-click>speed adjust. Enter the exact same length of the video into the new length of the audio track. Might need to render, might not.
