HDCam & HDV & DV in same project
We have a project that uses HDCam 24p, HDV 1080/60i and DV (60i). We want to stay with full HD 24p at the end of the project, and since FCP doesn’t have the HDCam codec, I guess that means full 1920/1080 and 24p. What should I do exactly with the HDV and DV footage to be able to incorporate it into the project? How should I “blow up” the framesizes of the HDV and the DV? Do I have to use another program or FCP will be able to transcode the framerate to 24p? I have the HDV footage ready and waiting for capture, but I wanted to make sure I start the right way. And another question: can I capture the HDCam footage some kind of low-res so that it doesn’t take up so much space/processor resources during editing, and later recapture the final cut with hi-rez? What should that low-rez codec/setting be?

Your HDV is 1080i already so that should be ok. For the DV, purhase the Kona 2 and upconvert it on the way in to 1080i. The K2 does a fantastic job of both upconverting SD and downconverting HD.
Also, use the Kona 2 to capture the HDCAM material to DV for a lower resolution.
FCP does cut with HDCAM material natively, you just need a capture card to support it.

I forgot to mention that we just bought the Kona 2. So, I guess I should edit everything downconverted to DV. What about the timebase issue? Should I edit on a 24fps timeline, since I would want to end with 24p at the end? Would the HDV 60i (and the DV) be transcoded to 24p without a problem in FCP?

I don’t know about the FCP 5 (that may or may not come out tomorrow 🙂 but I thought HDCam is not supported natively in FCP.

FCP has cut natively with HDCAM for pretty much since it came out. I used to cut HDCAM with my CineWave system two years ago. Just use your 1080i Easy Setups and start editing. Kona 2 comes with a slew of easy setups, choose the one that best suits your needs.
