To Dual or not to Dual?
Hi guys,
Maybe somebody here can help me on my dilemma.
I have been thinking to get a second Monitor for my Setup at home.
Which is a Dual 2Ghz, 4.5GB RAM, X800TX Card and a 20 -

Even in OS 9 you could move the menu bar to the other monitor… no problems there.
If you run more than one app at time, I’d certainly want another display… no matter where it is.

Hhmm I thought you where only be able to have one Menu displayed on one screen.
So I can have the one Menu for example (Apple symbol – Final Cut Pro -
A “dual monitor” on a Mac is exactly the “same” as having a very WIDE single screen.
Anything you can do on one monitor can be done split between TWO… its just allows much more screen “real estate” to work with.I always work with two monitors out of convenience even with word-processing programs.
(Photoshop, with all of its windows is MUCH better on dual-monitors.)Besides, you can use ANY two monitors (they don’t even need to match is screen-size) so you can even borrow an older monitor to use until you have the budget to buy the one you really want.
Right now I’m using a 21″ CRT and a 19″ CRT and they work great together.

LCD’s are so cheap right now that I think a second monitor is almost a no brainer. A decent 17″ LCD second monitor will not cost much and working will be much more convenient than a single monitor.

Yes, when you open the monitor prefs, you can simply drag the menu bar in that window from one to the other.

Newegg.com has some really good buys, as well. Here’s a 19″ Samsung (analog only) for about $350, but they have quite a selection and a great reputation. Hope this helps…

If you have an open PCI slot, consider running the second display from a card like the ATI Radeon 9200. That way, VRAM-intensive apps like Motion (and playing High Def H.264 ?, and even some aspects of FCP5 ?) can utilize the full 256MB your X800 XT has available, rather than splitting it 128/128 to drive a second monitor connected to the X800 XT.

I’d vote for dual monitors. In FCP for regular editing I keep the browser window quite large on the monitor on the left which helps keep me organized. I’ve also built a bunch of screen layouts for different purposes. My favorite is for color correction. I have waveform, vectorscope, histogram, parade, frame viewer and a little browser all open to my left, and my regular editing interface to the right.
I don’t think you will regret the purchase.
The menu bar can be on either monitor, but I don’t think you can have two menu bars. Please correct me if I am wrong.
