  offlineRT codec

  I am setting up editing workflow for a feature and am expecting 200+ hours of footage.

  For previous projects I captured using the (full-res) DV preset but considering this new footage load I am planning to use the offlineRT Photo jpeg preset (320X240 scaling and 35% compression).

  Other than sacrificing the resolution, are there any other drawbacks or will this codec still be robust enough for the offline edit?

  I personally hate it. It is even worse than Avid’s 20:1 IMO. But what choice do you really have outside of stocking up on external firewire drives or something. You should really be able to use it though for a simple cuts rough edit. I wouldn’t do much FX with it in that state of course.
  Give it a try with some test footage and see if it will work out for you.
  Also read up on how to “up-rez” your footage when you are ready to online. If you haven’t done it before, you should read up on the process (just search posts in this forum).

  I use it alot on my powerbook when travelling. It’s an extremely handy feature, great for anytime you would have a problem with disk space in full res (carrying firewire drives around in the sahara isn’t that practical)

  Use it to rough edit in, leaving in shots that your not sure about, and then uprez. Ken Stones site has loads of useful stuff on it:
