I’m not clear what the yellow – “proxy” render bar means, but it is not rendering a feathered wipe foe me. What needs to be done to have the render complete? The wipe plays as a hard edge wipe, and not a feathered one as I have selected. I can see when I toggle through it that the feathered effect is there, but it does not play through in real time. Anyone offer the solution here? Thanks. – Rob

The Balis article on the Ken Stone site above is excellent. Here the quick and dirty answer to your question.

A “Proxy” is a stand in, or temporary replacement. FCP can’t render that effect in real-time so it substitutes a similar effect. It assumes you will render before final output.

In order to maximize the number of effects you can see in real time, go to the RT drop down menu (upper left of the time line) and choose, RT Unlimited and low quality. However, I think many of the wipes don’t work in real-time, hence the decision to display with a proxy.

The article on the Ken Stone site goes into the reasons for all of this in great detail, and really helps.

What a treat it is to go to bed with a question, and wake up with the answers. Thanks much, guys!

I wish everyone would read that article. Not understanding how RT Extreme architecture works (including how to render correctly, when to render and when not to, how to use Unlimited RT, the “blurry photo” misunderstanding and MANY other issues) results in countless posts here at the cow.
