No timecode when sequence in viewer
Posted by Autorecall2003@yahoo.co.uk on May 8, 2005 at 6:54 amHi,
If I bring a sequence into the viewer with ex. selected takes, the timecode of the material has then changed to the sequence and not the raw original timecode file from the tape. Then I can’t reimport the originals again because the timecode is lost. I have heard that I can do this in Avid. Will FC5 5 be able to handle this problem?
Thanks

May 8, 2005 at 12:26 pmThat’s what I have done. I have the timecode overlay on, but I am getting the timecode of the sequence with the selected takes and not the timecode of the original material. Any idea how to solve this?

May 8, 2005 at 3:22 pmOk, I have just tried this. I used the video filter “timecode generator” and “Timecode reader”. I get the same timecode just bigger on top of the timecode overlay. I still get the timecode of the sequence and not from the original source.
Is it not normal to make a sequence of selected material and edit from that? Or even edit from a sequence that has been edited from a sequence that has been edited from a sequence that has been edited from a sequence 🙂 If I then have to reconnect or mediamanage the material I ofcource need the original timecode.

May 8, 2005 at 5:14 pmYou cannot open sequences in the viewer, but you can open nested clips, in which case the sequence timecode will be displayed. Are these nested clips? If so, you need to double click on the nested clip and the original clips will open in their own sequence. In that sequence you can load individual clips into the viewer and see the original timecode.

May 8, 2005 at 6:08 pmMy copy of FCP HD shows me clips’ TC in the TC overlays of the Viewer window if it is a sequence loaded in the Viewer. It is normal to edit from the sequence of selects and there is a little feature in FCP just for that – hold down Command key while hitting F10 or F9 and the clips will get from the Viewer to timeline “unnested”.

May 8, 2005 at 6:31 pmI can drag a sequence into the viewer and use it for editing. Even if it is nested clips I’m still only getting the nested sequence timecode and not the original. And I don’t want to nest, I just want to edit from a sequence with selected takes. Ok, I get the thing with nest, and doubleclicking to get the original clip, but thats just a lot of extra work just to use a clip from a sequence.
Does anyone know if the original timecode is lost or what happens if one had to reimport the whole project for whatever reason?

May 8, 2005 at 6:39 pmThanks.
Well, my FCP HD does not show me the clips TC when in viewer if I use a sequence. I tried the command F9 and it seems to be a shortcut for inserting a clip from the viewer nested. In the canvas I still get the sequences timecode and not the original clips and I am afraid of messing up the project. -

May 8, 2005 at 8:38 pmLets do it step by step.
– you capture your takes from a tape with device control so the clips in FCP carry the tape TC
– you drag, copy or somehow else put the clips on timeline and edit out bad takes etc. That’s how you create you Selects Sequence.
– you drag this Selects Sequence from the Browser to the Viewernow what?
I suppose you hit Command-N to create an empty sequence, lets call it First Cut, open it in the timeline and start cutting from Selects in the Viewer to the First Cut on the timeline. You can either cut your footage to First Cut as parts of Selects with F10, F9 or as clips with Command-F10, Command F9. You see the timecode of Selects in the current TC box in the Viewer and you see the timecode of the clips in the TC Overlay in the Viewer. Doesn’t appear to me as a problem. Do I miss something here?

May 8, 2005 at 9:00 pmWell, you are certainly right. What I was doing was just dragging the ‘sequence in timeline’ down onto the timeline, and that gave the wrong clipTC. When I hit command F10 it all works out as I want it to.
Thanks for spelling it out for me, now I can do what I want.
