You all apparently have more experience at this than I so I’m asking for a bit of advice. If you can take the time, I would appreciate it.

I’ve been running FCP HD on am IMac for the past year or so. 1 gig of ram and external storage. I have been doing DVCAM projects.
I grant you that I don’t always get real time effects and it may be getting slow.

Now with FCP 5 and the new capability to edit HDV. (I have this camera and plan to edit HDV) I’m under the assumtion that I will have to upgrade to a new system. What are your suggestions on how to set up a totally new system.

What Dual G5 should I look at? What specs?

Should I look at Dell monitors as apposed to the expensive Apple displays? 1 or 2 what size?

I would like to output the timeline to an HD LCD monitor that I have. it has several inputs, DCI, component, ect.

How much external storage? what type Firewire or USB2? what recommendations.

Do I need any added cards with the G5’s that are newly on the market.

Thanks to everyone. I’m about to spend some money. I would like to spend it wisely.

I am in a comparable situation, filming a film on HDV and waiting for FCP5 to edit it as such.

I presume you are correct you need an update to work okay. I think a minimum setup for a comfortably fluent workflow would be something like:
    G5 DP 2GHz
    2x512MB RAM
an extra 250GB or so SATA harddisk

The upper is approximatly my setup, if you can afford some extra I would suggest:
G5 DP 2.3GHz (big pro of this model is upgradabilaty to 8GB-RAM)
    2x1GB RAM
    2x400GB is a nice out-of-the-box option*.
ATI Radeon 9650 256 MB graphics card (+
