I’ve used media manager to recompress already captured 24PA dv footage into 23.98 offline RT, and I’m encountering framerate and aspect ratio problems. The 24PA footage that I recompressed to offline RT remains in pixel aspect “ntsc – ccir 601”. Put a clip into a 23.98 “ntsc- ccir 601” sequence with no problems. Just each time I open a clip in the viewer I have to uncheck “show as sq. pixels” so it doesn’t look so, well… square.

Now I’ve got 30 more hours to capture, and not wanting to have to capture in full rez then wait for conversion to recompress, as well as dealing with problems of delete, shuffle, delete, I decided to capture in offline RT on the fly. I made a custom capture preset using photo-jpeg compressor @ 29.97fps and which removes advanced pulldown. Aspect ratio is multimedia large (4:3).

So I capture, and noticed 2 strange things. Under the pixel aspect column these newly captured offline RT clips are “square”. I control-click, change it to “ntsc- ccir 601”. That was easy. Also the “vid rate” is 29.97 rather than 23.98 like my other clips. Place into a 23.98fps sequence, and wham! Red render bar. I make a new sequence with 29.97fps and “ntsc – ccir 60” pixel aspect ratio and there’s no red render bar.

So my capture setting is making 29.97 clips and is doing something strange with the advanced pulldown frames. Usually, if I capture 24PA DV footage, the TC cycle of the clip will be 30fps, but it will skip 6 frames every increment of a second. These clips I just captured don’t skip frames in the TC. I triple checked my setting to make it almost identical to the “DV NTSC 48 khz Advanced (2:3:3:2) pulldown setting” under “capture presets”, so I’m not sure what is wrong. I’m wondering whether Apple put some advanced setting in that Advanced pulldown preset that I don’t know about.

    Please help!

    Thanks,
    Alexander

I don’t think you can remove the pulldown on the fly and get a Photo JPEG compression done at the same time… it’s just not gonnna happen, and isn’t supported by FCP… I think you’d be better off simply capturing the material, removing the pulldown and keep it all in DV or do what you started to do… I’d certainly test out the recapture to make sure the up res later isn’t going to cause you problems.

That said, I’d not recompress at all. Just capture in full res DV and buy a FW drive if need be.
