  Final Cut Quicktime files not always 29.97

  I’ve been having this problem for a long time and I don’t know if anyone else has had, or even noticed, if they have the same one.

  Since Final Cut Pro 3 (I am using FCP 4.5 now), I’ve noticed that when I captured DV footage and played the Quicktime file (out of Final Cut) and displayed “show movie info,” the frame rate would only occasionally be the correct 29.97. Sometimes it would 30.02, 29.98, 29.93, etc. Back in Final Cut, the logging info would claim it was the correct frame rate. Now I’ve tried this with various computers: the G4 & G5 desktop and G4 Powerbook that I have, not to mention my old school’s various computers and many of my friend’s and I’ve always encountered the same problem. My question is, “Is this a problem?” I called Apple once when it first happened and they said it should ALWAYS say 29.97 and if not it was because it was dropping frames. During capture, I never get alerts that I am dropping frames. Has others encountered this? I do a lot of offline res editing so I’ve been worried that it would screw up the timecode during recapture. My workaround has been to keep recapturing until I get 29.97 which can take an extraordinary amount of extra time.

  PS – I’ve used various different cameras and decks to do the capturing with the same results. Also, all hard drives have been 7200 RPM, except for the Laptop which was 4200 RPM. I have received the best results using a SCSI but even that one is inconsistent.

  If you don’t see a problem, you don’t have one… I’d not worry, if this has been going on for a while, I’ve never seen a problem with it.

  I have this problem with HD footage captured thru FinalCut Pro w/ Blackmagic HD card. Yes, FCP reads files correctly, Combustion reads files correctly, no problem so far…. UNTIL I tried recompressing 200 captured clips using Sorenson Squeeze. It was showing wrong framerate and all clips were messed up after compression loosing a couple of frames at the end or showing wrong frame rate. That’s a really annoying and stupid bug. I needed to process all my files 1 by 1 manually in combustion wich removed the problem and then Squeeze was fine. Really annoying bug.
