  Lost Frames – NEED HELP!!!!

  hi!

  my fcp hd-editing suite makes problems since the latest 10.3.9-system update. while capturing the process is stopped becaus of detected lost frames. i have a 1tb appel xraid vie fibrechannel connected to a g5. videocapturing via aja-IO-box. i also tried to change the capturing destination to another disk (to erase the possibility of raid-malfunction) but the error seems to be permanent.

  i already tried to eleminate the preferences and tried the “sudo update_prebinding -root / -force”-stuff in terminal. nothing happend!

  i need help!

  I dont know what kind of footage you are working with, but, if it’s DV, have you concidered that maybe the tapes them selves are having problems? Dropped frames are a pain in the neck, and I have found that bad tapes lead to dropped frames consistently. Sometimes you can rewind the tape and recapture, and everything works alright, but sometimes the tape is just gone for good.
  If this isn’t the case then forget I said anything. That’s just my experience with random dropped frames.

  You learned one of the painful lessions of non-linear editing. Never update your system while in the middle of a project. Updating is a sticky issue. If the system is working fine…purring like a kitten, then why update? Updating can (as you found out) just lead to problems. The only time I’d recommend updating is when it is needed…such as going from 10.2.8 to 10.3.9 when you update your editing software from FCP 4.1.1 to FCP HD…since FCP HD only works with 10.3.

  Now…off my soapbox. Try zapping the PRAM…restart and while the computer is starting, hold down the OPT-APPLE-P-R keys until you hear the computer’s startup tone 4 times. Then let go. Then use the Disk Utility to Repair Permissions. If none of this works, it might be time for a reinstall of FCP.

  Actually, I’ve been hearing that the problem is with the 10.3.9 OS upgrade. You might want to re-install OS 10.3 then run the 10.3.8 combined updater to get to back to where you were before your OS upgrade.

  Sound advice, Shane. I’m going to wait a few months and see what happens before even trying the Tiger/FCP5 thing. (Anyone remember the early days of FCP4?) While the new features are cool, I don’t actually need multi-cam at the moment, and all our footage is currently SD, so again… why upgrade? When I see FCP5 is running rock-solid, I’m there.
