    hey graham

you seem to be up with all the technical low-down on video and codecs. what are the issues if any with using mpeg 4 encoded video in fcp 4.5. what is the quality like and would mpeg 2 be better?

    thanks mate

I wouldn’t edit any MPEG based codec in FCP. Best thing to do is to open it up in Quicktime and save it out as either uncompressed or lightly compressed. FCP doesn’t like the MPEG codecs because of their predictive frames, which cause FCP to hiccup when trying to get the frame it wants from the video.

cool thanks for that graeme. so where does that leave FCP and HDV as doesn’t this format use a type of mpeg 2 for its encoding?

Well, either Apple change quicktime / FCP, or they change HDV into something more easily editable. Most people change the HDV as no matter how hard you try or how clever you are, MPEG2 was never designed to be edited natve.
