Posted by Erik Jägberg on April 8, 2005 at 8:46 amHi everyone!
Is there ANY way that I can convert a windows media file to quicktime so I can edit it in FCP?
I want to subtitle a film and the customer only has it in WMV format. Thanks for any help at all!

April 8, 2005 at 1:35 pmHi Erik. You know, of course that Bill gates doesn’t want you to do anything with a WMV file, except watch it. 😉
When I am confronted with having to use WMV files in FCP, I use an application called Snapz Pro, which does screen capture movies. It’s really neat, and it costs $69. Here’s the link:

April 8, 2005 at 2:11 pmWe have had some success by saving out of WMP on a PC to a lowest common denominator AVI codec. It’s absolutely crucial that you absolutley know for a fact that the codec will be available on the Macintosh. Dozens of the old and obsolete AVI codecs are not and never were available for Macintosh. The AVI can then be opened in QT.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

April 8, 2005 at 3:23 pmIf you can wait for a bit this piece of as-yet-unreleased software ought to do the trick:

Supposed to be released Q1 2005, so perhaps we’ll hear something at NAB…

April 8, 2005 at 6:43 pmIf all else fails, you can always play the .wmv file out to tape, then digitize it back into FCP. Steve hasn’t figured a good way to encrypt the good old fashoned analog signal yet.
