  ClipWrap transcode speed – or lack of

  I’m currently waiting for ClipWrap (v 2.4.4) to finish transcoding an AVCHD file (two 2.13 GB clips joined to make one) and it’s taking an awfully loooong time. The original clips came from a Sony NX5 camera, 1080i, 29.97 and are on an external drive connected to my system via e-sata. Transcoding to ProRes 422. So far it’s taken 2.5 hours and the progress bar is only at about 80%. Mac specs: 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 16 GB RAM – Media 100 Suite 2.1. Over 3 hours to make one 24 minute clip seems a bit much wouldn’t you agree? Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong and how I can speed this process up? Earlier versions of ClipWrap seemed to be a lot quicker. I’ve also noticed that earlier versions would import clips into Media 100 as each one finished – this version waits for all clips in the list to transcode before importing. Maybe I should go back a version?

  Just noticed that ClipWrap 2.4.6 is available. Once this transcode is done I’ll update and see how that goes.

  Well this looks promising – updated Clipwrap to 2.4.6, added three files (total 5.6 GB), joined to make one ProRes and clicked ‘Convert’. In just a half hour it’s already about 80% done!… and I’m not wearing a seatbelt!! The one change I made in preferences was deselect the ‘Convert Audio to LPCM’. The original audio was recorded as LPCM – could this have been the cause of the long transcode?

  It’s been 38 minutes since I clicked ‘Convert’ and the file is done. All is well. I apologize if you’ve read this thread, gotten nothing useful from it, and felt it a waste of your time. I’ve learned something and am glad to share it.

  Good to know. Not sure if there is an issue with the 2.4.4 version or what, but maybe this helps somebody else in the same situation.

  As an attempt to answer my own question, I just transcoded another clip and this time I selected ‘Convert Audio to LPCM’. The 12 minute clip took 15 minutes to transcode to ProRes. This leads me to believe that there is indeed an issue with v 2.4.4
