Is there a way to create an adjustment layer, and have it only affect certain layers?

I thought I remember seeing a tutorial (somewhere?) in which they showed that a 3D layer or precomp or some other type of layer cannot be effected by an adjustment layer, and that any layer placed below this layer won’t be affected by an adjustment layer placed at the top of the timeline?

Does this still hold true for AE 7? And if so, what type of layer/object? (I tried 3D and precomp, and neither worked).

Thanks in advance for any help!

If you make a pre comp the layers you want to affect with the adjustment layer, and then apply the adjustment layer on top in that precomp it will affect all the layers in that comp.
