goodbye final cut, hello m100… (again)
ok i know im not at all a final cut pro guru, i know how to capture, i know how to edit, and do multicam, and use all the programs that come with it. I currently work with a dual dual g5 with a blackmagic design multibridge extreme card. its not so bad.
Here’s my problem. We shot over 8 hours of footage on a JVC HDV camera, and in a rush to get the tapes ingested, we had an intern stay up late one night and capture all the tapes from start to end. hoping to follow my years of media100 experience, we would digitize entire tapes from analog component signal into the blackmagic with timecode/RS422, create a sequence, and then redigitize our selects. what an awful experience this has been trying to uprez a few cuts for a TV spot. I think final cut pro is just awful when it comes to input and output. reading through numerous cow threads and a user named “bryce” the general consensus is that way final cut pro communicates and handles files is funamentally different than m100, premiere, and avid, and little has changed in its core archtecture since v1.0.
final cut will not let me redigitze subclips from a big clip, it has to redigitize the entire original clip. how awful. thats what batch capture does. you can use the media manager to make your clips offline, then create a new project, and then instruct it to create master clips based only on your in and outs you created. i dont know why this is necessary. then once its all in you have to match your sequence settings to match what you just redigged or else you get the render bar.
we’ve decided to sell the blackmagic card and buy an HDe. Thanks to the AJA card, we will be able to have media100 and final cut on the same computer. i’ll be happy to eventually adapt to the final cut process of offline to online, but right now i gotta be able to have the simplicity of media100’s scalable codec quality for HD. its just too easy and i shouldnt be caught up with 1 million and one settings to avoid a “render bar” .
i’m so glad media100 has bounced back… thank you boris
