Tiger and M100i working fine
Posted by Matt Greif on May 12, 2005 at 2:37 pmI recieved a new G5 dual 2.7 and expansion chassie and was a bit dismayed when told that I had to use tiger as my OS and could not install 10.3. so I decided to give it a try before sending the system back for a lesser G5 running Panther so that I could use m100 I’ve been editing full time for two days now including using m100 files in after effects for compositing. I’ve never been happier with a computer and have not had on issue with media 100. Tiger as an OS is not worth more that $10 for what you get compaired to 10.3.9

Can you tell me which expansion chasis (make/model) you purchased and what type of disk array/adapter card you use with this system? It is exciting to hear that things are working well for you under Tiger.
I also wondered if you knew whether it is possible to run FCP 5 on a system such as yours. (for HD projects or multi editing, etc.) Wasn’t sure if Media 100 and FCP can live together.
Thanks! -

May 13, 2005 at 3:59 pmI’m using the media 100 approved Magma 4 slot PCI to PCI chassie
Ive also installed an Atto FC 3305 fiber Card for communication with a Rorke Data Galaxy 16 bay Drive Array with just over a terabyte of striped and partitioned 10000 rpm drives. The Drives are connected to a Vixel 7100 1 gig fiber switch and 3 seperate media 100 systems
– Dual 2.7 G5 running Tiger
– Dual 1gig G4 Running Panther
– 800mgz G4 Running PantherI also have two 450mgz G4s connected with eithernet to all systems so I can Use all non active Systems as an After Effects Render Farm
I’ve not had any problems running Final Cut 4 on the same System as M100 but my need for this has been strictly limited to basic Final cut operations as it is not our main NLE

May 13, 2005 at 6:04 pmThank you for all the specifics, Matt! Very helpful as I plan my move from Media 100i ver 7.5 + OS/9 to something more compatible with today’s world.
Are you running QT 7 or did you back down to the QT 6.5 that Media 100 specs for ver 8.2.2?
Thanks again,
Jim -

May 14, 2005 at 1:16 amWe are running QT7 without problems with our 8.2.2. And with Tiger is like have a completely new computer. I think the major changes in QT7 are those related to the new HD codecs not for the QT engine.

May 14, 2005 at 5:54 amHow much work have you done on it? My 8.2.2 xr is running stable as can be on 10.3.9 (G4 single 867mHz), but I really want to instal Tiger on the system for the extra bells and whistles.
keep us posted please!

I noticed that you have both a G4 Dual 1GHz and a G5 Dual 2.7GHz running Media 100 8.2.2
I wondered if you notice much difference in responsiveness of the M100 application between these two computers. (obviously, rendering speed will be different – just wondering about things like working with clips, changing between active windows, opening bins, working with realtime effects, etc.)
I’m considering buying a used Dual 1.25GHz G4 to avoid the expansion chasis issue and want to balance that with any productivity gain possible under a faster G5.
Thanks for your take on this! -

May 17, 2005 at 4:36 pmNo Exessive increase in m100 function speed but a large difference in rendering
