  • DOF in AE causing jagged edges on in focus elements

Posted by Zedmotion on September 2, 2006 at 4:36 am

    Hi,

I have imported an extended rpf sequence that I rendered in Lightwave 3d. I can apply the DOF 3d effect to the footage and it works except that the in focus elements of my composition end up with slightly jagged edges. The rest of the out of focus stuff is nicely blurred. Does anyone know a way to improve this? The alph channel with the footage is nice and smooth. I tried applying a matt choker but that cuts a tiny bit off around the outside which I do not want.

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers,

This is a problem that often shows up. Depth-mattes or Z-mattes aren’t anti-aliased, causing the jagged edges.

I usually end up rendering and posting at twice the resolution and then downscaling – to remove the jaggies…

Or rendering in multiple layers and applying separate lensblurs.

Barend, has any 3D app solved this problem? Maybe MAX RPF within Combustion?

    Thanks,

Not that I know of, but it’s been a while since I investigated this.

An anti-aliased depth-channel doesn’t always look good either, but it can be achieved by rendering out a separate pass where you assign a white shader to the entire scene, and add black volumetric fog.

There’s a Depth Shader for Maya at:
    https://www.highend3d.com/maya/downloads/plugins/rendering/misc/1318.html

But often an anti-aliased depth-channel may cause it’s own strange edge artefacts…

We had similar issue’s when doing comp with 3D and real-filmfootage with loads of DoF as well has the project was full 1080i50 HD. It was a hard to get everything to work for us
