Premiere Pro keeps crashing, not showing/playing video
Posted by Neil Orman on October 15, 2019 at 2:00 pmI can still open projects, but once they’re open, PPro won’t show or play my sequences in the Program window. And when I try to close the application, it won’t close and I eventually have to do a force-quit. Has anyone encountered this? PPro was working fine until a few days ago, then this started happening and won’t stop. It doesn’t matter which project it is either. They’re all doing this. I tried clearing my media cache and that didn’t help. Any tips would be much appreciated!

October 15, 2019 at 2:44 pmMy first question would be…did you update to Catalina? If you did then that could definitely be your issue. Adobe recommends not updating to Catalina at this time.
If you did not update to Catalina then I would simply uninstall Premiere and re-install it again. That’s assuming your project files and media are on another drive.

October 15, 2019 at 4:16 pmThanks for the quick response, Andy. I meant to include before that I updated PPro this morning, before I posted on my problem, hoping that would solve this. It didn’t but I’m now running version 13.1.5. I don’t believe that’s Catalina but just let me know if you or others know different – thank you. I’ll going to try un-installing and re-installing PPro, but before I do I wanted to add that I’m seeing an error that says ‘a low-level exception has occurred,’ with one of those red triangle symbols with an exclamation point. Just let me know if you or others have any more thoughts here.
Thanks, Neil -

October 15, 2019 at 4:37 pmIt’s possible that some of your preference files may have become corrupted during your recent update. Try this below, however it will basically put Premiere Pro back to factory default settings on relaunch.
To rest preferences Press Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) while launching Premiere Pro. You can release the Alt key or Option key when the splash screen appears.
OR
To reset preferences and plug-in cache at the same time, hold down Shift-Alt (Windows) or Shift-Option (Mac OS) while the application is starting. Release the Shift-Alt keys or Shift-Option key when the splash screen appears.

October 15, 2019 at 4:55 pmSorry, I realized you were talking about the Apple OS with your Catalina point, not the Adobe version. My apologies this issue has fried my brain. To answer that question, I’m running Sierra (10.12.6) on my MacBook. Also, I’ve since un-installed and re-installed PPro, and it didn’t fix the issue. But good news is I was able to fix the problem another way, when a colleague suggested hitting option and shift at the same time I opened my PPro app. That instantly fixed it!
Thanks again for your response.

October 15, 2019 at 6:15 pmSorry Andy, it looks like you suggested the very same preferences-resetting solution – thank you! I simultaneously discovered it talking to a video colleague, and didn’t see your response till later. Much appreciated again,

October 21, 2019 at 8:26 pmPlus 1 on the symptoms, but unfortunately resetting the prefs and plugin caches didn’t solve our problems. We’ve got two seats running Windows 10 that both started this behavior (plays fine for 10-15 minutes, then we just get “Media Pending” and it won’t quit without crashing the app and requiring a force-quit) as soon as they were updated to 13.1.5. The issues span both new and upgraded projects, and projects that range from simple to complex.
Anyone else experiencing this?
