Will upgrading an underpowered machine’ RAM improve performance while grading?
Hi,
My question is as stated in the subject. I have a waay underpowered laptop editing canon c200 footage (mp4 4K) at work. The performance is generally okay as I’m editing with proxies, but as soon as I move over to grading, there is a huge delay when applying effects. I would like to be able to work in resolve, but there is juts no way at the moment as it keeps crashing.
So, my specs are:
i5-8250U 1.6GHz
8 gigs of ram.Aaand, thats it.
I know this will never become even close to being a proper editing machine, but would buying a few sticks of better ram, lets say 32 gigs, improve my performance, or is the cpu (and no dedicated GPU) bottlenecking the whole system too much?
All help would be much appreciated.

from what I can gather, the turbo only works on one core, so you’re essentially using 4 cores at 1.6 or 1 core at 3.4. Premiere like 6 cores or more. Plus Premiere’s grading tools now rely heavily on GPU. I just don’t think extra ram is going to help with such a limited processor and no modern GPU.

More RAM will never, ever hurt your system. Premiere’s Lumetri Color is also hardware-accelerated, so a good graphics card will really help, too.
