  Why does 50% 8K video look the same as 200% HD

  Hi there,

  On the timeline there’s two tracks. Track 1 has video of a models face, in HD ProRes 422, transcoded from 8K (RED Weapon) raw. The image has been scaled up to 200%. Track 2 has the same image in 8K ProRes 422, transcoded from the same 8K (RED Weapon) raw file. This image has been scaled down to 50%.

  The images look identical when you toggle between them.

  I was expecting the 8K file to be much crisper but they’re the same.

  Any thoughts why that is happening?

  Your monitor may be incapable of showing much difference.

  If you take the time to watch the entire Yedlin explanation video it will become clear that there’s no actual viewing advantage to the ever increasing resolutions. Currently many productions shoot 4k but deliver in HD and so the 4k allows for punch ins without losing quality.

  So perhaps down the road when it becomes standard to deliver 4k masters the 6k or 8k will serve the same purpose as 4k today but the Yedlin analysis makes it clear that there’s no actual viewing improvement with the higher resolutions.
