Leaping into 4k Having issues
Greeting Guys! It’s been awhile But i’m finally back in the scene. My Question is as Follows, I’ve recently acquired clients that wants 4k video. My Specs are below
Editing HD – x3 SSD Raid 0 (Internal)
GFX- GTX 980ti
Ram – 32gigs DDR4
Processor – Intel Core 97 – 5820k CPU 3.30GHZ
Running Windows 10 & Abode Creative Cloud
My system seems to be stuttering quite a lot, working in 4k, I have playback set to 1/8 but I’m having issue like “Media Pending” never going away (unless I restart Premiere), Video playback at Fast speeds while audio is normal speed. It’s just sluggish. I’m confused. I built this machine to handle 4k video and its not doing what I’d hoped. any help?

What is the codec of the 4K footage? Camera native? Something like AVC-S or AVCHD…MP4? Or did you convert it to DNxHD or Cineform? Many camera native formats are highly compressed and very difficult to edit without converting, or having a very high end machine

Yeah, that is why it’s stuttering. It takes A LOT to decode that on the fly. COnvert that to DNxHR or Cineform and you’ll see a marked difference. And yes the file sizes will increase

Thanks! Any preference? Is MXF decent or will that may be exported to another Codec?
Just so where clear, I’m just exporting out these files in media Encoder to DNxHD or Cineform correct?

I know AVCHD/H.264/MPEG4 is hard to playback but I would like to think the GTX 980 Ti and a six core CPU would be able to play it back at 1/8 resolution. I wish I had the video file to test out on my system.

all of your issues will go away once you start working with 4k files in mxf format.
I have an i7-5820k, GTX970, 32 gigs ram with media on 4 drive TB2 raid and I have no issues with full res playback in Premiere.

This is important…how much ram does your NVidia card have?
What really made 4k editing much smoother for me was
having a gpu with 4gb of ram. I went from a GTX 670 2gb
card to a Quadro 5000 with 4gb of ram and now editing
4k is just as smooth as editing 1080.Make sure you are using the latest Nvidia card driver
and CUDA version.
