    So on my colleague’s computer somehow his selection tool always acts as if the command key is held down. This doesn’t effect anything else, but forces him to hold down the command key whenever he needs to adjust a clip’s length without effecting another clip.

    His selection tool (V) always shows up as a yellow bracket when at the edges of clips rather than the traditional red. (see photo)

    He has the same Adobe version as me (totally updated Adobe CC 2017) and I checked to make sure it wasn’t his keyboard causing the problem.

    How do I fix this problem?

    In the Preferences under Trim there are a few options.
    Uncheck Allow Selection Tool to choose Roll…………
