10 bit workflow
4K 10 bit images captured with Panasonic GH5 (3840×2160 4:2:2 30fps h.264 MOV). I presume Premiere Pro CC2017 project settings can accommodate video in this format. What video cards and monitors (monitoring) will permit a 10 bit workflow? I’m not a pro, just a hobbyist, so hoping for an NVIDIA card and consumerism monitor that won’t break the bank.

Well, there are other formats that are 10 bit that Premiere works with fine…ProRes is 10-bit, and many DNxHD formats are 10-bit. Just know that working with 4K H.264 video in real time (it’s a very complex format) will require a pretty beefy system. 32GB of RAM at least, very high end CPU and Graphics cards to decode this on the fly.

Hey Shane. Would probably do most work at 1920×1080. I would take a look at results periodically at 4k. I don’t know which NVIDIA cards are capable of outputting Premiere’s 10 bit signals and what monitors are options. Couple months out Panasonic is releasing an all intra 10 bit format for the GH5 so the h.264 10 bit won’t be the only option.

Are you transcoding? Simply setting the sequence settings to 1920×1080 will not help you because Premiere will still have to decode the 4K video.

Project and sequence are 3840×2160. Previews (timeline playback) are 1920×1080 (to a 1920×1080 monitor) Export media at 3840×2160. That’s what I’m doing now. I have to get my 4k file off my computer to play it back on a 4k monitor/tv. At the least I’d like to play the finished 10 bit 4k file through my (to be acquired)4k 10 bit capable video card to my (to be aquired) 4k 10 bit capable monitor. Dream would be 4k 10 bit timeline playback and monitoring at same.9

keep in mind, 1070/1080gtx will only output 10 bit in directx. premiere uses opengl so only 8 bit in there, in case you’re wondering.

I received that caution when I queried NVIDIA about my current 670 card which is why I started this post in the first place. Does one need to use a Quadro card in the NVIDIA line if one wants to do 10 bit monitoring using Premiere? Or do any of the more recent NVIDIA cards output in Premiere’s open gl?
