After Effects to Final Cut: Pixel Aspect Ratio
Hey, I have some animations in after effects (bar transitions, as well as a logo intro and signature) that I’ve put into Final Cut, but now I realize that the person who set up final cut pro before going on vacation didn’t use square pixels, but HDV 1080 (1.333) pixels. Therefore my after effect materials look all scrunched… and I’m not quite sure how to fix it. The aspect ratio is the same, but if I change the pixel aspect ratio in after effects it squishs it… Is there something I’m not getting here?

This usually is an easy fix – you just have to find the right setting in final cut to “unsquish” your footage. I am guessing that in AE you created a square pixel 1920×1080 image? If that is the came, then I have noticed that sometimes final cut tries to make up for this by tweaking a setting when you bring the clip into the timeline… set it always seems to get this wrong.
Do this:
1. put your AE clip in the sequence (looks squished)
2. double click the clip and select the motion tab
3. look at the distort parameter – what does it say? is it 0? if so, tweak it until it looks correct. if its not 0, set it to 0 and see if that helps.hopefully that tweak in final cut fixes the problem. i guess worse case scenario is you can re-render with changed settings, but i don’t think you should have to. let me know if that helps. peace.

Hey, thanks for the advice, but after posting I already changed the settings and re-exported in after effects… (guess I should have waited for an easier time, huh). I do have one more question though:
I changed the settings and re-exported… but I can’t really tell if its still a bit squished. I was curious if I need to change the compositions nested inside of my composition to non-square pixels or if I should just make the main composition non-square (I went through and change them all to non-square, and I’m curious whether thats making it double-correct and squish itself).

Hey, your motion panel actually did help.. I guess this should have been in Final Cut forums instead of after effects… I’m newer to final cut but now that I know about that my problem is solved. Thank you so much!
