Using AE with HDV
Posted by Liam Stephens on August 12, 2006 at 7:30 amHi All
Just wondering if anyone has had issues with using HDV material in AE. I’m about to start a short film using HDV and will be doing masking, keying, time FX and color FX. Any issues or tips?
cheers

August 13, 2006 at 7:18 pmAE can work with HDV but you are going to have some patience, I have a 3 ghz dual sistem with 2 gb of ram and every time I use AE with Hdv my house moves. Also by carefull with the order of your codecs othewise it may not even start.
A good idea to work much faster is to create a proxy of your footage, if you dont know what im talking about check Andrew Kramer’s website http://www.videocopilot.net he has a tutorial on the subject.hope it works.

August 13, 2006 at 10:29 pmGeez that’s kind of scary as i was planning to use my Dual 1ghz 2gb of ram machine. i guess i’ll do a few tests and go the proxy route if i have to. You’d think AE would cope well with the HDV. Thx for the reply

Not necessarily. HDV uses MPEG-2 compression (basically), which is interframe compression, “between frames”. It doesn’t have full information for each frame — only every 12 (?) frames or so, with the rest of the frames containing only partial information.
AE doesn’t have a history of liking that sort of thing.
When you have HDV, and you want to do anything with it in AE, I recommend you convert it to a video with info on every frame, compressed with some kind of high-quality intermediate codec such as Animation or Photo-JPEG. I believe Apple has an intermediate codec. This won’t make the image quality any worse, but it will just “freeze” it so it’s more useable in AE.
If you Google HDV and “After Effects” you should find more info.

August 13, 2006 at 11:06 pmYep I was thinking that was my best bet. My system is unstable as it is don’t really want to see fireworks coming ou the back of my G4. THough that might be cool! cheers
