Problems with sidecar files written on camera media
I know some people are quite religious when it comes to software writing on camera media such as SD cards. Since, among others, Premiere writes XMP files when editing metadata, I wanted to ask if anyone has ever encountered a situation when this really created a problem like the card no longer being accepted by a camera or something like that.
I know that it’s best practice not to edit directly with material from SD cards. Just wanted to get some statistics if anyone ever really had a problem with that.

I know and respect that position. My question was rather technical in nature.

I don’t edit from media cards for all the reasons above as well.
With that said, since some camera recording systems are highly picky about that sort of thing, why chance it? Besides, It is a good practice to check the media card content first, and if ready to re-use, format it. No more issue.

I am not questioning the advice. The question was more asking for “yes I have had a case where camera X did not work with the card anymore because there was an additional file on it”. This sort of thing.

I’ve had this happen on my Sony FS7; if any changes are made to the card, including deleting clips via the computer instead of formatting them in-camera, the camera tells me that it needs to “restore media.” I then need to reformat in-camera unless I want a bunch of weird empty clip files showing up in the camera’s playback browser.
+1 for all who are saying copy, backup, then wipe.
