    Hi all,

I’ve been editing using Premiere for a few years, but exclusively on OSX. When I built my new rig I went Windows to better work with some clients and of course, am now hopelessly lost 🙂

Typically when I edit it’s either AVCHD/60p or H246 out of a DSLR. Before editing I always used the ProRes codecs – is there an equivalent in Windows? What sort of format is the best to edit in (both 24fps and 30fps, 1080p square pixel)?

I appreciate the help, and if you have any experience I didn’t bring up that could save me trouble of course I’d love to hear! 🙂

    Hi Daniel,

I think you’re asking about an intermediate codec, to convert files to prior to editing? Totally unnecessary for most users, just edit the native camera files. You can play/edit ProRes files on the PC, but cannot export to ProRes or use ProRes for render previews. With CC, you can export to Avid DNxHD via Media Encoder, and that would provide an equivalent file size and quality to ProRes.

    Thanks

I fully agree with Jeff that DNxHD is the way to go in regards to export especially if you ingest to take advantage of using previews in render (just like FCP/ProRes, use DNxHD wrapped as MXF). But you can export ProRes on a PC with some effort (some think it’s a hack or whatever and it’s a bit PITA but it works and is “in the field” much like many other hacks we’ve all had to do to get the job done).

Beyond your final output codec constraints, edit native – works great.
