I just upgraded to CS6 after long time use with 5.5. I’m taking the PP CS6 Essentials course at Lynda.com in becoming acquainted with the new features. Am at the chapter ‘Previewing and Marking media in the Project Panel’ and this is where I’m having some trouble:
I’m trying to set an “in” point on one of the media browser icons but nothing’s occurring visually.

    I hover over the icon/
click to bring up the timeline bar/
    have the location set then/
    click “i.”

But no In Point registers. Is something turned off?

I’d like to add that ‘O’ is not working within the media browser as well but ‘J’,’K’, and ‘L’ are.

You are refering to two different panels.
In the Media Browser you can use j,k and l to view the clips.
In the Project Panel in icon view you can use j,k and l also but there is were you set I and O In and outpoints.
For the shortcuts to work select the clip first.
