Problem with video size
Hi All
I’m new to Premiere Pro and I’m a bit stuck.
I have created a video which will be shown on a monitor in a school cafeteria.
I imported all the clips and added some text and then made them into an MPEG video.
The problem is that when I playback the video it only takes up about half of the space available.
I have tried various things but I cant get the video to stretch over the whole screen. I’m trying to play it on a wide screen tv.What am I doing wrong?

What is the source video format/size?
Premiere Sequence Settings used for edit?
Export settings?
How are you playing video into display – DVD? Laptop? Media Player hardware?

I edited some pictures to give them a 16×9 aspect ratio and then imported them into Premiere. I put them onto the time line and then added some titles.
I exported the whole thing as a MPG2 and transferred the file onto a SD Card.
I’m playing the media on a Real HD Media player into a 720p tv. The media player is also 720p.
I’m not really sure what I’m doing but I hope this helps.

In Premiere, please check Sequence > Sequence Settings. This will tell you the format of the sequence, such as 720×480 or 1280×720. Ideally, you’d probably want a 1280×720 (720p) sequence for your needs.
When you exported to MPEG-2…what size? If you exported at DVD size (720×480), that is a lot smaller than your 1280×720 display.

You’re right. The sequence settings are 720×480.
I also checked the output and that is also 720×480.Can I change the sequence settings or do I have to start a new project?
I’m assuming the output settings are selectable when I export the file.

Hi Dave,
In your project, go to File > New > Sequence
There, you can choose a new preset, such as AVCHD 720p 30.
In your original Sequence, do Select All, and Copy, then switch to new 720p sequence and Paste. This will recreate job as 720p.As you said, you can then export at any size.
Note that you may need to do some work on images…in Preferences, I always have “Scale to Frame Size” enabled so that images always are fit to the screen. When you change sequence presets, sizing may change for you. Changing that setting does not affect assets already imported, so you may need to manually right-click each image on timeline and “scale to frame size” as needed.
I don’t know what size your stills are natively, so this is up to you to make it look good for your needs.

I tried as you suggested but the media player keeps telling me that the format is not supported.
If I try and use an export setting greater than 720 then the player won’t play the file.
It will play in full screen on my PC monitor but when I put it in the media player it won’t play.
Also, when I export the file as 720×480 then it will play on the media player and the width is good but the height is too small. It needs to be about 30% bigger but if I try and make it bigger then the player says it can’t play it.

What is the make and model of your player device, maybe I can look up the specs. I use a Western Digital WDTV and it plays HD files just fine.

Jeff, I’m using a Real HD Media Player. I was one I found on my searches and I bought it because it has a ‘Play when switched on’ function that I needed.
It’s rated at 720p but I’m having problems understanding what settings I need to set and where. I cant export anything greater than 720×576 or the player wont play it. And if I do use those settings then the pictures seem to be wide enough on a wide screen tv, they are just too small vertically.
As I said before, this is only happening on video. The stills I have on the player fill the whole screen without problem.Dave

Can you be more specific about the player brand/model? Searching for “real hd media player” results in a million hits…there are countless Chinese versions meeting this description. A link to purchase site perhaps?
