I’m upgrading to a new iMac which has the processing power to handle Premier. My present 5 year old iMac barely enables playback. The new computer has Thunderbolt. I checked out Thunderbolt external drives on Apple’s site (Promise Pegasus R4).

Wondering if these new Apple external T-bolts are suitable for handling HD video.

Yes. TB will handle multi-streams of HD.

As Chris pointed out Thunderbolt can handle the throughput. The Promise site states the R4 gets speeds up to 500MB/s, which I’m guessing is in RAID-0. Although, I saw one site that put it through RAID-0, 10, 5, and more. If you plan on RAID-5, the numbers don’t look good for the box. https://hamed.dk/blog/101-pegasus-r4-r6-review
But if you have a backup plan in place (even with RAID-5 you should) then RAID-0 and backups should work well.

The only problems with the iMac is that you can’t get CUDA goodness with the current display card. At least, max out RAM if you can.
