I’m new to Premiere Pro (I was using FCP) and I’m wondering if my machines and setup are reasonable for multi-camcorder editing. Typically I use four HD Panasonic camcorders that create AVCHD footage. I have my MTS files on one or other of my Caldigit AVDrives. For the iMac the connection is FW800 and for the MBP I use the Flashcard/USB3 connection

Both Macs are always up-to-date as far as the OS is concerned.

I only have Pr, not AE.

    1) iMac bought in late 2009. Processor: 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB

PP Memory Preference: RAM reserved for other applications: 1.5 GB, RAM available for Pr: 2.5GB. Optimize rendering for: Performance. These seem to be the defaults and were established during installation.

    2) MBP 17″ bought in early 2011. Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB

PP Memory Preference: RAM reserved for other applications: 2 GB, RAM available for Pr: 6GB. Optimize rendering for: Performance. These seem to be the defaults and were established during installation.

My main concern is smooth playback which isn’t bad but not always perfect. As a hobbyist and retiree, export and rendering times are not so important. I don’t mind editing with Playback Resolution set to a quarter. Most of what I do gets put on DVDs.

What else can I do? Might it help to buy more RAM for either/both machines? If so what would be a reasonable amount of RAM to go up to?

    Many thanks for any advice.

    FCP 7.0.3 iMac 24 3.06 4GB OSX 10.6.7. MBP 17″, 2.3 GHz 8GB. Near Geneva, Switzerland

See this page for resources about making Adobe Premiere Pro (and After Effects) work faster:
    “optimizing for performance”

Thanks, lots of good stuff there. The MBP seems to be behaving today and I’m going to double the RAM on my iMac
