Quicktime and Real codec alternatives?
Posted by Tony Connoly on January 1, 2011 at 1:05 pmQuicktime and Real Player are two pieces of software that I try to avoid putting on my Windows PC.
I am reinstalling Windows 7 for the new year. Since Premiere Pro requires Quicktime, I thought I would check here whether there are alternative codecs for both Quicktime and Real or a way to install the codecs without installing the software. Since we’re on the topic, are the codecs that come with PP for AVCHD the best out there?

January 1, 2011 at 2:22 pmI understand avoiding Real, but why avoid putting QuickTime on your computer?

January 1, 2011 at 2:47 pmWhy not Quicktime?
(1) It forces me to install and always have running in the background a process that checks for updates to Apple software.
(2) More problematically, it tries to become the default media player for a bunch of different file formats. I get confused by that.
(3) Most problematically, it has a bug that messes up my ability to hear certain audio files. The problem happens once in a while when I extract audio from a DVD. I have to convert the audio using a different program. I’ve been reading about the bug for several years, and it hasn’t been addressed.
(4) Finally, the first time I installed it I accidentally checked a box and ended up installing iTunes too. Avoidable for sure, but I have a strong aversion to iTunes.

January 2, 2011 at 3:50 pm1. disable in options.
2. every type of image can be set to its own default player.
3. usually dvd audio is AC3, install the AC3 filter codec.
4. deinstall i-tunes, no big deal. Happened to me more than once. -

January 2, 2011 at 9:27 pmWhat is the AC3 filter codec?
So Quicktime provides the best codecs for its files?

January 2, 2011 at 9:41 pmThanks Ann. Ideally, I would rather not install Quicktime. qttask.exe cannot be disabled via the control panel. It runs in the background unless you edit the Windows 7 system registry. It’s a very heavy-handed application. I don’t recall whether it was AC3–I’ll check when I get back home–but Quicktimes does mess up one type of audio file that comes off of DVDs. Are you suggesting that that codec can be downloaded and installed separately? In any event, I hate having to deal with a bunch of players vying for my approval, so if I can limit it to Windows Media Player I would be happier. If it’s not possible to decode Quicktime movies without installing the whole application so be it, I just want to be sure. Same goes for Real. Thanks!

January 3, 2011 at 5:16 pmI found something called K-Lite codec pack at https://www.codecguide.com. Is that any good?

January 3, 2011 at 5:22 pmK-Lite is poison to post-production software. Seriously. Don’t install it. About once a week, while helping someone to troubleshoot a problem, I find that they’ve installed K-Lite and 1) this is the source of the problem and 2) it is very difficult to remove.

January 3, 2011 at 5:31 pmOk, thanks Todd. I’ll install Apple Quicktime. How about Real. Is that the best one can do for that codec?

I honestly have no idea. I haven’t even thought of Real for years. Is anyone still using that codec/player for anything?
