    Hi,

    I just tried to export/convert a 1 minute 8 second edit of WMVHD video (WMV9 @ 1920×1080) to AVCHD/M2TS (ie. MPEG 2 transport stream – same as produced by Sony HD AVCHD Handycam and natively plays back on PS3) and it took CS4 Media Encoder over 31 minutes to do the conversion.

    Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong.

    When I do edits and exports from AVCHD footage from camera to M2TS it only takes at most 2x the clip length to export.

    Why is this WMVHD conversion taking 30x the clip length????

    If it is normal is there any way to speed it up without spending thousands on new hardware?

    I haven’t got a slow machine by any standards….

    WMVHD was never intended as an editing format, it is a highly compressed delivery format. So, you are converting from one complex codec to another, a lot of processing going on, this is not a standard workflow.

    If windows media player can decode frames from WMVHD in less than 1/25 second then Premiere can do it too. Once the frame is decoded it is sent to the compressor to re-encode to whatever output format is needed. It should NOT matter what the input format is because decoders are designed to decode FAST. The only thing that should take time is the ENCODER ie. the MPEG4 output in this case. You are saying that the input format is slowing down the encode at output stage. If this is the case then the Media Encoder is a very badly designed/optimised program…

    …and anyway it doesn’t happen the other way around does it. ie. i edit AVCHD files (which are way more compressed delivery format) and output to WMVHD….

    Exactly, it doesn’t happen the other way around….WMV is a delivery format, so you are reversing the workflow. AME is not going to optimized to encode FROM WMV
