  Quicktime export is huge or bad.

  Hey,

  Apologies in advance for the noob/previously asked question – I’ve been looking through different forums for a while but no joy.

  I’m new to video (I work in stills), and have a simple task I’m doing for a friend.

  The job (done): Take a 9 min clip (already edited), take old audio track off, replace with new one.

  The problem: The export. I’m on a windows machine, and the only decent exports I’ve had came from using a wmv preset. It’s 720p footage with titles, and all my QT exports look like junk. Not a big deal, but my friend is on Mac.

  Side note: Footage was originally edited using FCP, and the 4GB file was encoded with Pro Res. It looks great, and is a QT file. I can’t get a good looking QT file unless it’s 30 GB.

  The Question: Is there any way to get a simular size file to the source (4GB), looking good (without artifacts in both titles and video), in the form of a QT file?

  I’d very much appreciate the advice of the learned.

  Hi Kev,

  What codecs are you using for your quicktime exports? Have you tried H.264 or Photo JPEG?

  Thanks for the reply – I realise that there’s a lot of things it could be, but mostly it’s down to my inexperience.

  I tried quite a few – h.264 looked really pixelated, and photo JPEG (which wasn’t as bad – I’ve used it in the past) did the same. It was really apparent on the text.

  In all I tried:

  Animation, H.264, Sorenson, Photo JPEG, uncompressed, DV/DVCPRO, None, Video.

  All were either huge (25-30GB) or horrible quality.

  I ended up going with a wmv file and posting to Vimeo, so it looks like problem solved. It’s here https://www.vimeo.com/14498099 in case anyone wants to get an idea of what I was working with.

  I’ll reply to this thread if I ever figure it out – no doubt the problem is between chair and keyboard.
